Rules

THE SBHL IS A RECREATIONAL LEAGUE THAT PROMOTES HEALTHY COMPETITION WHILE PLAYING THE GAME OF HOCKEY IN A FUN, SAFE, AND RESPECTFUL MANNER. 


REFEREES TO BE RESPECTED AT ALL TIMES.
NO ROUGH PLAY PERMITTED.

1) Teams are responsible for their benches. Friends are permitted, however an unruly/disruptive behaviour will lead to an unsportsmanlike penatly. Repeated offences will lead to the removal of the involved person(s). 

2) Fights are NOT permitted. 
Those involved will be automatically ejected and potentially face further sanctions. 

3) A player receiving more three or more penalties in a game will be ejected from the game. A second offence will lead to a suspension. 

4) Any players that leave the bench to participate in a scrum will automatically be given a three game suspension. 

5) A player must have a shift by the end of the second period to be eligible to play in the third period and beyond. 

6) Suspended/Ejected players will not be allowed in the gym under any premise during SBHL hours (5:00 - 10:00pm). This includes before/after games. They are not allowed to be behind team benches.

  • Goggles (provided) / helmet with cage [MANDATORY]
  • Mouth Guard (recommended)
  • Shin Guards (recommended)
  • Gloves (recommended)
  • Cup (strongly recommended)
⇨ Goalies are REQUIRED to play with a cup 



I.        Goggles must be worn at all times while playing, otherwise a penalty will be call on the offending player.
- Shin guards, gloves, mouth guard, 7 a cup are highly recommended.
II.        Slap-shots can be taken on defensive half of the gym, while shots can only be waist high in the offensive zone.
III.        Face-offs occur after a goalie, or to start a period. Face-offs may also occur at the discretion of the referee.
IV.        Goalies covering the ball lead to a dead ball. Dead balls must be played behind the goalie by the defensive team. The team has five seconds to make a play, at which point the referee will shout “LIVE” meaning the checking team can attack the ball.
V.        If a goalie drops the ball before the goal line after dead ball, the play is immediately considered live.
VI.        A player can receive a maximum of three penalties in a game before being ejected. Ejected players must leave the gym space and will not be permitted back in for any reason.
VII.        Penalties are assessed by the referees only, and will be two minutes in length. Each penalty must be served in corner with the score clock.
VIII.        A win in regulation equates to 3 points, a win in overtime equates to 2 points, a loss in overtime equates to 1 point, with a loss in regulation receiving zero points.
IX.        A team can have a maximum of 10 players dressed per game, including the goalie.

X.        Friends are no longer permitted behind team benches. Only players actively playing are permitted to be behind the team bench.
